Alterior Motives is a solid, no-frills classic rock and roll band from Reno County in South Central Kansas. Founded in 1990, the band has enjoyed a storied career performing throughout the state, as well as other locations, including a stint in Las Vegas, Nevada. The band's name is the result of a misspelling on an early poster, and involved a printing error which read "Alterior" instead of "Ulterior". The name stuck and the rest, as they say, is history.

Over the course of the band's 31-year history, Alterior Motives have gone through many personnel changes. The band is adaptive, depending on the requirements of the venues at which they perform, sometimes working with a full horn section or just a simple quartet. The three remaining original members are Vince Stephens (bass), Ralph Brown (saxophone and vocals), and Ben Ferguson (guitar and lead vocals). All are seasoned veterans of the Reno County rock and roll scene dating back to the 1960s. Because of the band's longevity, they are sometimes humorously referred to as "The Rolling Stones of Reno County".

Bassist Vince Stephens was a founding member of early legendary Hutchinson bands, such as Dante's Infernos and Kansas Grass. It was with Kansas Grass that Stephens released regionally successful singles, which featured the late Chris Allen on guitar. He has also worked with bands in Colorado and Texas. He remains one of the most in-demand bassists in this area.

Ralph Brown is know locally as "The Joy of Sax" man because of his innovative saxophone work. Brown, too, was involved in the local rock and soul scene from the 1960s having performed extensively with The Imperials at venues which include the old Fireside Club in Hutchinson. One of his most singular honors was being inducted into the Kansas Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Ben Ferguson's connection with the local rock scene began with the Midnight Train band in 1969. In the 1970s Ferguson's bands opened up for bluesman Freddie King. He spent most of the 1980s in Europe where he performed with internationally-known artists such as Jimmy Vaughn and the Fabulous Thunderbirds and became acquainted with ZZ Top. From 2016-2018, he lived in Changsha, China where he performed with the BennieGo Band.

We hope you enjoy the show. It's only rock and roll, but we like it!
