Wild Horse Youth Challenge

PURPOSE: The Mission of The Wild Horse Youth Challenge is to give youth ages 8 – 18 the opportunity to take part in gentling a BLM wild horse and preparing the horse not only for the Wild Horse Youth Challenge competition, but also for the rest of the horse’s life. We also want to promote building good character, responsibility and work ethic in our Competitors also preparing them for their future as adults.


The Wild Horse Youth Challenge is being produced with the support of the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse & Burro Program providing Wild Horses through their Foster Agreement Program.

• Interested Competitors must complete and submit the competitor Application along with, BLM Facility Requirement form, Liability Release Form, Model Release Form. Please submit Via Fax, Email or Mail on or before Monday, April 1st.

• Selected competitors will pick up the assigned Mustang in Hutchinson, KS at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility, May 25th. You will be asked to complete Foster Agreement Forms and bring them with you at the time of pick up. If you cannot pick up on the above date, Contact Dion Pope @ 620-694-9826 and arrange for an appointment the following week (28th-31st). Pick ups after the 25th will be by appointment only.

• The Mustangs will be weanlings and yearlings. Mustangs will have current vaccinations, a current Coggins and hooves trimmed.

• Mustangs will be pre-assigned to the Competitors randomly prior to pick-up by a BLM Employee.

• Competitors must meet all requirements listed on the following pages for hauling and stabling their Mustang.

• Competitors will have from the day they pick up their Mustang until the day they arrive at the event to train and work with their Mustang.

• Mustangs will be under the BLM Foster agreement. Competitors Parent/Legal Guardian will be reimbursed $4.00 a day for care of mustang from pick up to the Day of Competition.

• The Wild Horse Youth Challenge will be held at the Kansas State Fair, Hutchinson, KS Sept 14th & 15th, 2019.

•The competition classes will include Showmanship, Trail and Free Style.

• All competitors competing in the event will have first choice to buy back mustang for $25.00 or you may choose to auction mustang at the event.

• The Wild Horse Youth Challenge will have 3 divisions: Junior 8-11, Youth 12-15 & Senior 16-18.

(age requirements will be based on age Jan 1st, 2019)

• Free Clinics will be provided by local Mustang Trainers to assist Competitors. Dates and locations to be determined.
