ADVANCE PURCHASED TICKETS: Exhibitor tickets purchased at time of entry will only be issued to the exhibitor upon the receipt of their item(s). For any reason, should exhibitors miss the designated receiving hours or choose not to bring their entry/entries, exhibitors waive your right to receive ordered tickets. The Kansas State Fair has a “No Refund Policy”. All advance purchased exhibitor / gate tickets must be “paid in full” by August 15th. If payment has not been made by the August 15th deadline, tickets will not be issued.

ALL EXHIBITORS:

  • *NEW - A $1.00 handling fee per exhibitor, due by entry deadline.
  • Online entries still have the option to purchase up to (6) discounted exhibitor tickets. Must be paid online, during checkout, and by August 15th.
  • Exhibitors filing a paper entry form, can only purchase up to (3) discounted exhibitor tickets. Must be paid at time of entry and by August 15th.
  • If you want to register online and need assistance, stop by the Kansas State Fairgrounds Administration Bldg. between 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday, with your completed paper entry form. If this is not convenient, you may also phone our office and we can walk you through the steps of our online process.
  • Allow yourself plenty of time. The length will vary for each exhibitor.
  • Each exhibitor will need their own account. If you are bringing all of your children's entries, you will need to create accounts for each child.
  • Yes, because you did entries online, you can purchase up to (6) tickets, per exhibitor. Online payment is required at time of entry by credit card. We cannot accept cash or checks for this process. We do not accept American Express.

  1. Award presentation for Champion Quilt - awarded on Governor's Day.
  2. Only (1) one entry per person, per class, unless otherwise noted.
  3. Articles are judged on General Appearance, Appropriateness, Design, Material, Workmanship, Assemblage, Stitches, Cleanliness, Finish (right & wrong sides), where applicable (not on counted cross stitch).
  4. "Other than listed" means items that can NOT be entered in any other class.
  5. All articles must have been completed within the past (2) two years.
  6. ALL articles entered in this department must have been made by the person in whose name the entry is made.
  7. A brief description of your entry (as to color, size or pattern) is appreciated.
  8. For protection of exhibitor, claim checks are required for release of all items.
  9. Shipped Items – Need to arrive before Sept. 1 - Shipping charges on all exhibits must be prepaid. Packages should be addressed to: Kansas State Fair, Competitive Exhibits Department, 2000 N. ATTN: Clothing & Textile Department.SUFFICIENT POSTAGE, PREPAID LABEL, MONEY ORDER, CHECK OR CASH TO COVER COST OF INSURANCE AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR RETURN SHIPPING SHOULD BE ATTACHED TO THE ENTRY FORM. When mailing contains multiple entries, please attach (by pin) exhibitor's name for proper identification.
  10. Although the Department does its best to care for all exhibits, we are not responsible for any damage or soiling of the exhibits.

  12. Overall Best Hand or Machine Quilt cannot win more than 2 consecutive years in a row.
All entries in this section must be a fabric sandwich made up of (3) three layers (a top, a filling, and a back) held together with thread or string that goes through all layers. Due to available display space, some quilts may not be seen in their entirety. Exhibitors are encouraged to submit a photo of the entire quilt (up to 8" x 10", placed in a plastic sleeve), to be included with the quilt when displayed.

Quilts with offensive odors or pet hair may be disqualified for judging and display.


Common Quilt Sizes

  • Placemats – 11″-12″ wide x 15″-18″ length
  • Miniatures – less than 36″ square unless otherwise specified in contest rules
  • Square table topper - 36” X 36”. Turn the quilt so the corners are pointing to the sides of the table.
  • Table Runner - 12″-18” x 40″-72”. Lengthen the table runner for longer tables.
  • Wallhanging – any size can qualify for a wallhanging. *Use requirements if specified for a contest
  • Baby – between 36″ X 36″ , 30” x 40” and 52″ X 52″ This size can depend on whether the quilt will be used in a crib.
  • Crib between 30″x 46″ and 36″ x 52″ Crib mattresses are different sizes.
  • Toddler 46″ x 70″
  • Bunk 66″ x 89″ and 74″ x 103″
  • Wheelchair Lap Quilt 36″ x 36″ to 38″ x 47″

All toys will be donated to children in need; ribbons will be given to exhibitors. The Kansas Highway Patrol will dispense the toys throughout the state. Entries must use new Polyfil-Stuffing. Eyes, nose, hair, etc. to be painted on with fabric paints or embroidered. Nothing may be attached with glue. Entries not meeting these guidelines will not be accepted.

When we say "GO" each contestant will begin crocheting their project to the pattern specifications. Judging will be based on speed and quality. All items will remain on display until the last Sunday of Fair.

Division 316 - Pillowcase Project

Premiums awarded for this division are 1st - $10, 2nd - $6 and 3rd - $4.

The Pillowcase Project is for grieving children and teens that have sleeping problems following the death of someone that they love. At nighttime, something special, like a handmade pillowcase, offers comfort during a difficult time. Make a set of (2) pillowcase for either a child or teenager. All pillowcases will be donated to children and teens in need.

*Exhibitor of the Overall Best Hand or Machine Quilt cannot win more than 2 consecutive years in a row.

Classes are now categorized by Amateurs, Professionals, or group classes.

Amateur & Professional Classes are strictly for items created by only (1) individual. Amateur Group classes must be only amateurs. Professional Group classes can consist of any variation of individuals as long as there is at least (1) Professional who assisted with the product. *This includes if Amateurs create the top of a quilt and pay somebody else to assemble it.

An amateur quilts for the joy and satisfaction of creating the quilted item but does not earn money. A professional is someone who teaches quilting, produces and sells quilted items or offers quilting services for a fee and earns more than $2,000 per year for their services. The former classifications of commercial quilters are now identified only as professionals.

2018 Theme : "Find Your Fun"
Show us how you "Find Your Fun" while participating at the Kansas State Fair

The blocks will be judged 50% on originality and 50% on workmanship and become the property of the Kansas State Fair. After the fair, the entered blocks will be used to create a State Fair Quilt which will be auctioned at the 2019 Fair. The 2017 quilt will be auctioned during the 2018 Fair on Saturday, September 15, at 4:00 pm at the Bretz & Young Injury Lawyers Arena. Proceeds from the sale of these quilts goes to the department improvements.

Anyone who would like to make the blocks into a quilt should contact the Competitive Exhibits Department @ The Kansas State Fair, (620) 669-3621 or (620) 669-3881. Quilt block packets can be purchased for $3.00 each from The Kansas State Fair, 2000 N. Poplar, Hutchinson, KS 67502 if you wish to mail a check or stop by the administration office.

Packet contains (1) - 5” x 5” and (2) - 9” x 11” pieces of fabric. Some of each must be used in the block you create. The background fabric is your choice and you can add as many additional colors as you would like. The following requirements must be met :

  • Only (1) block per exhibitor.
  • Purchasing a kit does not mean you have entered your exhibit. You must still register online or send in a paper entry form. (one has been enclosed for your convenience or visit www.kansasstatefair.com)
  • Your completed quilt block needs to measure 12.5” square. It should be equal all the way around the block. DO NOT QUILT.
  • No iron-on means of attaching fabric to the block shall be used; unless, after application to the block it is stitched down securely by the participant so it will not become loose later.
  • Only (50) kits are available. Exhibitor may use an established pattern or create an original block.
Judges will consider use of fabric, workmanship, and overall appearance.

Quilt Block Contest - "Find Your Fun"



Division 322 - Quilt on a Stick

Premiums awarded for this division are 1st - $25

The 2018 fair theme is "Find Your Fun". This year we are asking you to create a quilt block showing something you found fun & entertaining, saw as being funny, had fun doing, on the grounds at the Kansas State Fair. Construct a rectangular quilt 8" wide by 9" high. Use any construction method, hand or machine quilting. Quilt backing must include a centered, vertical sleeve in which a paint stick (provided at check in) will be inserted for displaying. Judging will be based 50% on creativity and 50% on workmanship.

Everyone is invited to make a Quilt of Valor Quilt Block. The completed blocks will be turned in to the Quilts of Valor Group to be organized and distributed to various QOV Groups to be made into quilts for our military personnel. The blocks will be judged 75% on workmanship and 25% on fabric choice. This years pattern was created by Pat Sloan. Pat is providing the block to The Kansas State Fair for use by the Greater Wichita QOV group

Create a wall quilt using a Wedding Ring Pattern of your choice (double, single, modern, traditional, etc.) The wall quilt must be no smaller than 12" x 12" and no larger than 30" x 30".

This contest is open to both amateur and professional quilters.

Exhibitor (male or female) must be 18 years of age or over. Exhibitor may sew for themselves or another person. No Bridal Gowns. No quilting will be accepted in the following classes. Quilting items must be entered in the various classes available in other sections throughout the Clothing section. ***These must all be textile items.

Please display your items with safety pins on clear plastic hanger ready to hang.
