Students to gain hands on practice of measurement and conversion of measurements. State Standards for Math 4.MD.1: Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a large unit to a smaller unit.

Materials: Paper and pencil.

Student Challenge:
What form of measurement could be used to measure a Llama’s height? What measurement tool makes the most sense to use? How tall is an average Llama? Convert your height measurement to its smallest form.

During your Kansas State Fair field trip, visit the Llama Exhibit in the Dairy Tie Barn (see fairgrounds map for building location). After learning a few interesting Llama facts have the class determine what measuring tool would be best to measure the height of a Lama. Different types of measuring tools will be provided. Then measure a few different Llamas and record your answers in feet. Back in the classroom have the students make a chart showing each Llama’s height in feet and then the height converted into inches.

1. Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg,g; lb,oz; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 foot is 12 times as long as 1 inch. Express the length of a 4 foot snake as 48 inches, Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1,12), (2, 24), (3, 36), ….

Learning Targets: What are the knowledge, reasoning, performance skills, and products that underpin the standard?

Knowledge Target (Know It): Know relative size of measurement units (km, m; kg, g; lb, oz; l, ml; hr, min, sec)

Reasoning Target (Mental Process – Use It): Compare the different units within the same system of measurements (e.g. 1ft = 12 in; 1 lb = 16 oz)

Performance/Skill Target (Show It): Convert larger units of measurement within the same system to smaller units and record conversions in a 2-column table.

How is this standard different than the 2003 standard? There was no conversion of larger unit into smaller unit
