# STEAM MATH 2.OA.1

## Kansas State FairSteam Ahead

Objective:
Students to gain practice of adding and subtracting. State Standards for Math 2.OA.1: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one and two step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart and comparing with unknowns in all positions.

Materials: Paper and pencil.

Student Challenge:
Create an addition sentence based on the chickens in the Poultry barn. Create a corresponding subtraction sentence.

Lesson:
During your Kansas State Fair field trip visit the Poultry Barn (see fairgrounds map for building location). Have the students pick a row of birds to count. Ask the students to create an addition sentence based on the birds in their row. Now have the students create a corresponding subtraction sentence.

Domain: Operations and Algebraic Thinking (2.OA.1)
Cluster: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction

Standard:
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one and two step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart and comparing with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Learning Targets: What are the knowledge, reasoning, performance skills, and products that underpin the standard?
Knowledge Target (Know It): I can identify which process to use to solve one and two step problems (within 100).
Reasoning Target (Mental Process – Use It): I can analyze the problem and decide the steps to use and which operations to use.
Performance/Skill Target (Show It): I can find the unknown in all positions by adding and subtracting in word problems.
Product Target (Create It): I can draw an equation with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Model with mathematics.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
Attend to precision.
Look for and make use of structure.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
