## Kansas State Fair Steam Ahead

Objective:
Students to understanding and practice of solving word problems involving money. State Standards for Math 2.MD.8: Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarter, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using \$ and ¢ symbols appropriately.

Materials: Paper and pencil.

Student Challenge:
Visit a concession stand and answer the questions below using their menu and prices.

Lesson:
During your Kansas State Fair field trip, visit any concession stand and look over their menu and prices. After brief review and discussion on money facts ask the students to answer the following questions.

1. What is the less expensive item on the menu? How many quarters would it take to purchase this item?

2. What is the most expensive item on the menu? How many dollar bills would it take to purchase this time?

3. Choose two items from the menu. If you were to purchase both item how much dollars and cents would you need?

Standard:
Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using \$ and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?
