JUDGE ALONG AT THE KANSAS STATE FAIR

QUILTS

WHAT JUDGES LOOK FOR IN A QUILT:


Is the quilt pleasing to look at and attractive?

It must be clean with no dark pencil or chalk marks that are too prominent to cause distraction.

Light marking is permissible.

There should be no knots showing.

DESIGN:


The design should have balance and rhythm with effective distribution of lights and darks.

Does it have unity, and the border's binding compliment the design?

Does the quilting design compliment the design in the quilt?

Is there color accent which gives the design movement and interest, and do the colors blend well?

Are the prints and solid colors used in pleasing relationship?

Does the border, binding the lining colors complement or harmonize with other colors in the quilt?

In judging original or multimedia design, does it show originality in the use of design and color?

Has an old design been varied in a creative way to achieve a new look and show originality?

WORKMANSHIP:


Precision of construction of top.

Do all the points and corners meet precisely in patchwork?

Are all curves smooth and flowing in applique?

Is the applique stitching either a compliment to the design or unnoticeable?

Have the layers of applique been applied and finished off
neatly?

Do the seams lay flat?

Is the construction strong enough to last the life of the quilt?

Do the patchwork pieces fit together smoothly?

Are the quilting stitches uniform and evenly spaced on top and bottom?

Are the quilting lines straight, and curved lines smooth?

Are the binding stitches unnoticeable, and is the binding sewn on securely?

Is the binding evenly filled with batting?

Are all edges finished neatly?

Are the corners mitered and as attractively crafted as the rest of the quilt?

Is the backing free of unsightly stitches, knots or marks?
