STEAM MATH 4.OA.5

Kansas State Fair
Steam Ahead

4th Grade Math

Objective:
Students to gain hands on practice in identifying and generating a shape pattern. State Standards for Math 4.OA.5: Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself.

Materials: Materials will be provided for you in the Domestic Arts Building.

Student Challenge:
Use the grid paper and various colored and sized sticky notes to create a pattern.

Lesson:
Art is Math and Math is Art. During your Kansas State Fair field trip, visit the Domestic Arts Building (see fairgrounds map for building location). After viewing all the different quilts and quilt blocks on display have the students create their own quilt block using a repeating pattern. Grid paper and sticky notes will be provided for them to use. Encourage students to be creative. Sticky notes can be folded to create different shapes within their quit block pattern. Student may take their quilt block art work with them when they are finished.

Domain: Operations and Algebraic Thinking (4.OA.5)
Cluster: Generate and analyze patterns.

Standard: 5. Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. For example: given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number of 1, generate terms in the resulting sequence and observe that the terms appear to alternate between odd and even numbers. Explain informally why the numbers will continue to alternate in this way.

List and Define the Key Concepts: (noun) number pattern, shape pattern, rule, feature, sequence

List and Define the Learning Target: (verb)   generate, analyze, identify, explain

Bloom’s Thinking Level: Remember Understand Apply Analyze Evaluate Create

Webb’s Depth of Knowledge: Level 2 (Skill/Concept)

Learning Targets: What are the knowledge, reasoning, performance skills, and products that underpin the standard?

Knowledge Target (Know It): I can follow and continue a given pattern.

Reasoning Target (Mental Process – Use It): I can make a number or shape pattern given a rule. I can find more than one rule in a pattern.

Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
