Kansas State Fair
4th Grade Math
Objective: Students to understanding and practice of solving word problems involving money. State Standards for Math 4.MD.2: Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals or time, liquid volumes, masses of objects and money.
Materials: Paper and pencil.
Visit a concession stand and answer the questions below using their menu and prices.
During your Kansas State Fair field trip, visit any concession stand and look over their menu and prices. After brief review and discussion on money facts ask the students to answer the following questions.
1. What is the less expensive item on the menu? If you were to purchase three of this item how much money would it cost you?
2. If you were given $10.00 to spend at this concession, what all could you purchase with the $10.00 and how much would you have left over?
Domain: Measurement and Data (4.MD.2)
Cluster: Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit.
Standard: 2. Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple factions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as a number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
List and Define the Key Concepts: distance, interval of time, liquid volume, mass of objects, money
List and Define the Learning Target: (verb) use, represent, solve
Bloom’s Thinking Level: Remember Understand Apply Analyze Evaluate Create
Webb’s Depth of Knowledge: Level 2 (Skill/Concept)
Learning Targets: What are the knowledge, reasoning, performance skills, and products that underpin the standard?
Knowledge Target (Know It): Add, subtract, multiply, and divide factions and decimals. Express measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit.
Reasoning Target (Mental Process – Use It): Infer the proper operation to solve word problems. Evaluate the smaller units of a larger unit.
Performance/Skill Target (Show It): Solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, money, measurement that include simple factions or decimals. Solve word problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scales.
Make sense of problems and preserve in solving them.

How is this standard different than the 2003 standard? Conversion was not tested.
