STEAM 2.MD.2

Kansas State Fair
Steam Ahead

2nd Grade Math

Objective:
Students to gain hands on practice of measuring. State Standards for Math 2.MD.2: Measure the length of an object twice, using different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.

Materials: Paper and pencil.

Student Challenge: Measure a park bench using two different measurement tools.

Lesson:
During your Kansas State Fair field trip, visit the Capper Gazebo (see fairgrounds map for building location). In this area you will find a couple of park benches with measuring sticks attached. Find out how long the bench is by using each of the different colored sticks. How many blue sticks is the bench? How many red sticks is the bench? Have a discussion about the results. Ask students to describe how the two measurements relate to the size of sticks and the bench.

Domain: Measurement and Data (2.MD.2)

Cluster: Measure and estimate lengths in standard units.

Standard:
Measure the length of an object twice, using units of different length for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.

List and Define the Key Concepts: (noun) length, object, units, measurements, size

List and Define the Learning Target: (verb)   measure, using, describe, relate

Bloom’s Thinking Level: Remember Understand Apply Analyze Evaluate Create

Webb’s Depth of Knowledge: Level 3 (Strategic Thinking)

Learning Targets: What are the knowledge, reasoning, performance skills, and products that underpin the standard?
Knowledge Target (Know It): I can identify units of different length.
Reasoning Target (Mental Process – Use It): I can predict that an onject can be measured using 2 different length units.
Performance/Skill Target (Show It): I can perform the measurement of an object using 2 different length units.

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Model with mathematics.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
Attend to precision.
Look for and make use of structure.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
