STEAM MATH 2.G.1

Kansas State Fair
Steam Ahead

2nd Grade Math

Objective:
Students to gain hands on practice of identifying and drawing various shapes. State Standards for Math 2.G.1: Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.

Materials: Paper and pencil.

Student Challenge: Locate and identify different shapes.

Lesson:
During your Kansas State Fair field trip have the students watch for different shapes. As students locate a shape, have them draw the shape on their paper, label the shape by its name and list the locations where they found that particular shape. The midway (before the rides start for the afternoon) would be a fun area to look for different geometric shapes.

Domain: Geometry (2.G.1)
Cluster: Reason with shapes and their attributes

Standard: 1. Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes. (Sizes are compared directly or visually, not compared my measuring)

List and Define the Key Concepts: (noun)  attributes, shapes, angles, faces, triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, cubes

List and Define the Learning Target: (verb)   recognize, draw, identify

Bloom’s Thinking Level: Remember Understand Apply Analyze Evaluate Create

Webb’s Depth of Knowledge: Level 4 (Extended Thinking)

Learning Targets: What are the knowledge, reasoning, performance skills, and products that underpin the standard?
Knowledge Target (Know It): I can recognize shapes, angles and faces.
Reasoning Target (Mental Process – Use It): I can classify shapes by their attributes.
Performance/Skill Target (Show It): I can find shapes in my everyday environment.
Product Target (Create It): I can draw shapes given clues of their attributes.

Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Model with mathematics.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
Attend to precision.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
